How To Use PolyTech Polyurethane Single Component Caulking Foam
The PolyTech Single Component Polyurethane foam (PT-10 & PT-16) is significantly
different from its two component counterparts. The foam kit comes in a single
pressurized cylinder. All the reacting components are contained in one cylinder.
The extruding resin from the cylinder is viscosous and tooth-paste like. This is
a moisture cured product. Upon extrusion from the cylinder, the foam resin initiates
the chemical reaction when it comes in contact with the moisture in the air. The
reaction rate is slow. Under 77 F and 68% R.H., the outer skin of the foam bead
will form. It will take an additional 30 minutes before the whole foam bead solidifies.
The caulking foam is mainly used for cold air infiltration around windows, doors
and exterior cold air entry points. It is useful for cracks or gaps that is narrow
and shallow, usually less than 1/2" wide and 1" deep. Due to its slow reaction,
if end user fills a deep cavity completely, the resultant foam will expand continuously
for the next 24 to 48 hours. The excessive post expansion may create problem for
the project. End users must fill the cavity to less than 50% to allow room for post
expansion. Protruding excessive foam can be trimmed with a serrated knife. The viscosity
of the single component foam resin is inversely proportional to the ambient temperatures.
The viscosity of the foam resin increases as the ambient temperatures decrease.
The flow rate of a standard formulation may be slightly too slow for some end users
in the cold winter months and too fast in the hot summer. We have "winter formulation"
and "summer formulation" upon request. The chemical reactions are continuous in
a single component foam cylinder after it exits the production line. Components
of Resin-A and Resin-B react perpetually until end user uses the product. The resulting
continuous molecular crosslinking between Resin-A and Resin-B creates a bigger and
bigger chemical molecule over time, and the resultant foam will become more viscous.
This is the main reason why the optimal shelf life of the single component foam
is approximately seven (7) months. The foam may become too viscous for easy application
beyond this point.
It is imperative that end users only purchase quantities that they can consume quickly
and efficiently. If they decide to carry inventory, use the product in a 'first
in, first out' fashion. Our product is significantly different than those foam aerosol
cans in Home Depot or other hardware stores. Most aerosol foam cans use a petroleum
base, flammable blowing agent. It is hazardous to use in some application. Our product
only uses nonflammble, Freon base blowing agents. Underwriter Laboratories certifies
that our product has the best (lowest) flame spread and smoke generation index in
the industry.
