How To Create Landscaping For Model Trains With PolyTech Polyurethane Pour-In-Place Foam Kits

Before the introduction of polyurethane foam, creating landscaping for model train sets was messy and time consuming. The landscaping was usually created with plaster materials. The creation process was dusty and messy. It took a long time for the material to solidify. It was almost impossible to impart fine details onto the creation. The finished landscaping was heavy to move around and it had a tendency to crack overtime. The PolyTech Pour-In-Place foam kit comes in two 5-gallons closed-head plastic drums. Under ideal condition, the kit yields approximately 40 cubic feet of expanded foam. The mixed resins expand and cure in a controlable manner. The two pound density foam is light in weight. It will be relatively easy to move a large foam structure around. The possible background that can be created is only limited to end users' imaginations. Final details can be imparted by applying paint onto the expanded foam. Structures such as rocks, buildings, train stations, lights and other scene components can be created easily. A rough guideline for creating landscaping for model trains with PolyTech Pour-In-Place foam:

  1. Place cardboard over the entire area for the model train landscaping.
  2. Sketch on the cardboard a rough placement of scenic components.
  3. Using separate measuring devices for Resin-A and Resin-B, pour out equal volume of Resin-A and Resin-B. The quantity measured should be just enough for one-shot.
  4. Empty both measured Resin-A and Resin-B into a small plastic bag.
  5. Shake and agitate the resins in the plastic bag.
  6. The resins will start reacting at approximately 2 minutes after being mixed. The top layer of the mixed chemical will turn lighter in color.
  7. Pour a thin layer of the mixed resins onto the desired locations of the sketched cardboard.
  8. The foam will achieve full expansion within 4 minutes after mixing.
  9. Mixed another batch of foam resin in a new plastic bag.
  10. Pour the reacting resin onto locations where more foam is needed.
  11. The final shapes of the scenic components can be adjusted with gloved hands within 10 minutes after the foam achieves full expansion.
  12. Various colors can be applied to impart fine details for individual landscaping components.
